Expert Cross Country Ski Service

Every cross country skier knows that the right grind and wax can make all the difference in your skiing performance. It’s the difference between gliding with effortless efficiency and feeling like you’re skiing on sandpaper. Nordic skiers are at the mercy of snow conditions, and Utah’s legendary, light-as-air powder provides a unique challenge. That’s where our experienced wax technicians come in.

Our staff includes a former NCAA Nordic champion who has been a wax technician for the U.S. Nordic Team and a tech for Rossignol – helping produce their factory grinds. Most classic and skate skis come from the factory with a grind which is not ideal for Park City’s low-moisture-content snow. That’s because many of the skis bases are ground for more humid locations which means your Nordic skis aren’t reaching their full potential until the grind matches our snow conditions. Read on to learn about our exclusive grinds, the process we use to get your skis “just right” and our full menu of tuning services.

How it Works

A proper stone grind is essential to help your skis take wax most effectively. At the White Pine Nordic Center, we use a stone grinder designed specifically for cross country skis. The pressure and speed is much less than is required for alpine skis, so our system gets the job done perfectly without damaging fragile classic or skate ski bases. After the grind, our technicians carefully condition your skis by applying several layers of wax to saturate the bases. They put the skis in a Thermobag, heated to 143.6 degrees Fahrenheit, for 6-8 hours where the wax becomes liquid. This allows the wax to fully penetrate the ski. After hand-scraping, we apply cold wax to harden up the base, followed by the wax of the day. The result is a much faster ski, so you’ll feel more like a professional than a weekend warrior.

Overnight Waxing

The White Pine Nordic Center has on-site equipment to take care of your waxing needs overnight. We know your track time is precious, and we wouldn’t dream of having you miss a day. Drop your skis off by 3pm, and they’ll be waiting for you the next morning. Please note, during the busiest times of the season, our waxing queue can get pretty long. When dropping your skis off, always confirm with the shop that they will be able to get them waxed overnight.

Daily Track Conditions & Recommended Wax

Stay on top of the Nordic Center track conditions on whitepinetouring.com or listen to KPCW (91.7 FM) each morning around 7:45am for the Nordic report. Since temperature, humidity, fresh snow, and track conditions all play a part in which wax to select, we offer recommendations for the preferred wax of the day as well.
