Nordic Boot Fitting

If you want optimum performance and comfort while Nordic skiing, then getting your boots properly fitted is a must. When your Nordic boots fit right, your balance improves and your feet are supported in all the right places, giving you better ski control.

Your feet are unique and so is the fit of each Nordic boot, which is why the boot fitting process takes several steps. The first is determining what category of Nordic skiing you are interested in: classic, skate, backcountry or cross-country touring. Next, we consider your budget, past experience with boot brands, and how often you plan to ski.

Once we have a good handle on your needs, we determine the idiosyncrasies of your feet (don’t worry, we all have them) and bring out our recommendations for the best boots for you. Then you try, try, and try again until you find the perfect fit for your feet. Got a wide foot with a narrow heel? We’ve got a boot for that. High instep giving you circulation problems? We’ve got a boot for that too.

Each Nordic brand tries to achieve an anatomical fit for a range of skiers, and to do so, they offer boots with a variety of lasts, volumes, and heel pockets. The last, or width, in the forefoot of the boot gives you more room (so your toes don’t get pinched) or less room (so your foot doesn’t flop around), resulting in better performance on the track. Volume, or the amount of room the boot has to offer, ensures the best mix of comfort and stability. The heel pocket is the most important part of the fit and helps you control your skis. Your heel should feel securely locked in and shouldn’t be able to move up and down while you’re skiing.

Why Use Superfeet Insoles?

Superfeet insoles complement your boot fit by supporting your feet from beneath. In many cases, the arch falls slightly when weight is applied to the foot and is unavoidable while Nordic skiing. When the arch falls, movement in the boot can follow, hindering performance and increasing the chance of injury. Superfeet insoles support your arch, which in turn reduces movement inside the boot and improves performance by increasing stability.

Evolution of Nordic Boots

Over the years, the construction of Nordic boots has shifted from pliable materials that were easily customized to stiffer and lighter materials, such as carbon fiber and thermoplastic cuffs and soles. While these new materials provide significantly better performance on snow, they don’t allow for personalized modifications. But don’t worry—we carry an assortment of brands, including Fischer, Salomon, Alpina, and Rossignol, that cater to a wide variety of feet to ensure we find a boot that fits your feet just right.
